Question for March 31, 2010

Connect the following,

A)

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

B) C)

The 95 South Africa rugby team captain holding the world cup, given to him by Nelson Mandela (who was also instrumental in the win because of his support for the team).
1 probably is a quote from his victory/acceptance speech.

(a) is the poem Invictus which is also the name of the movie about Nelson Mandela (c) and the rugby team - (b) is the captain of the team, I guess (not sure of his name).

The poem is "Invictus", which also happens to be the title of the recent movie based on Nelson Mandela's life when South Africa won the rugby World Cup

Invictus poem handover by Nelson Mandela to Francois Pienaar

The people in the pictures are Francois Piennar and Nelson Mandela. I think the poem was either written by Mandela, or was written to describe Mandela. Mandela was instrumental in getting the people of South Africa to support the predominantly white South African rugby team at the 1995 world cup, which they won with Piennar as captain. Not sure what the connect is, if not this.

The connect is Invictus, the movie. The poem is Invictus; it was found in Mandela's prison cell written on a piece of paper. B is Francois Pienaar, SA Rugby team captain in 1995 and C is Mandela.

The movie is about how Mandela saw the world cup as an opportunity to unite the nation and put SA on the world map by winning the event. He did all he could to make that happen.

In the movie, Mandela gives the "Invictus" poem to his national rugby team's captain Francois Pienaar before the start of the Rugby World Cup. In reality, Mandela provided Pienaar with an extract from Theodore Roosevelt's "The Man in the Arena" speech from 1910.

Congrats to one and all!
