A precursor of X was present in 1958 World Cup and was dubbed "giganternas kamp" by the local press. The term itself was coined in Spanish by Mexican journalists in the 1970 World Cup. It was used again in Mexico during the 1982 World Cup in Spain. It was popularized after the draw for the 1986 FIFA World Cup. The label was widely repeated by the English-language media.
