William Makepeace Thackeray?
Without googling, my guess is the author of Vanity Fair . However his first name escapes me. I am going to say : William Thackeray.
The first is a Vanity Fair Cover, the Second Barry Lyndon. Both of Those and Mali are works of Thackeray the novelist and the fourth picture of course is Balasaheb Thackeray!
I guess I could have got the connect between 2nd and 4th without googling, but I had no clue of 1st and 3rd until I did!

The 4th pic is Balasaheb Thakrey, which is almost similar to William Makepeace Thackeray who wrote the novels:

Googled: The movie Barry Lyndon, which led me to the wiki on Thackeray.
1st pic is an Annie Lebovitz pic. 3rd place is Timbuktoo & 4th is Bal Thackrey. No idea about the connect.

The connect is William Makepeace Thackeray.
The first picture is a cover of Vanity Fair, the second picture is the poster for Barry Lyndon, and the pointer on the map is the location of Timbuktu in Mali. All three names are also novels written by Thackeray.
The fourth picture is that of Balasaheb Thackeray, who anglicised his name after William Thackeray.
COngrats to Truce, Angelus, Rahul, Anangrawat, Dev and the anonymous poster (why anonymous?) for the correct answer. Good try, Nikhil.
