My guess is Edison testing his electrocution method on an elephant.
They were testing using electricity to kill an elephant which led to the use of the electric chair for executions?

Edison is indeed testing his electrocution method on an elephant (which later led to invention of the electric chair), to prove his point that AC is more dangerous than DC (during the famous AC-DC battle between Edison and Tesla).
