A computational study conducted by a joint Indo-US team led by Rajesh P N Rao of University of Washington, consisting of Iravatham Mahadevan and others from Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, was published in April 2009 in Science, which claimed "entropic evidence for .... in X". One of the key figures in the paper is shown below, which compares the conditional entropy of X with other kinds of Y in an attempt to establish X as similar to them.
The paper has added fuel to an already raging fire of controversy over this politically sensitive topic, with some researchers claiming that X is not even a Y in its common form, but simply ideographical.
Identify X and Y.

X=the letter 'y' and Y=vowels??
X is the Indus Valley script, Y is the family of Indo-European languages. The whole controversy is on whether the symbols are merely pictures or they are the script to some pre-vedic language.
Aha! My friend Hrishi is a one of the authors of these two papers. I wish I had read them more carefully!
X - Harappa/Mohenjadaro scripts language
Y - Devnagari/Sanskrit?
Didn't know they were creating a controversy!!
X = 'J'?
Y = Silent Letter?
Just guessing cause 'J' is silent in some dialects (eg Scandinavian), but not in English.
something to do with the Aryan-Dravidian concept.. I know there was some analysis of some script or something.
X- Characters found on Indus valley seals that some claim is a rudimentary script, but others claim is just ideographical and unrelated to the Indus language.
Y- Scripts of written languages.
Congratulations to Sailesh for coming closest and to Dev and Kane too for getting the context.
The Science paper can be found here. The controversy is detailed at the wikipedia page here
