The ephemeral nature of its creation is thought to be a metaphor for the impermanance of life in Hindu philosophy. It is one of the most commonly found art forms in India and is known by different names in different parts of the country.
What am I talking about?

rangoli?
"Ephemeral" points to rangoli (hindi), which also fits with the fact that it is a common art form across all regions of India known by different regional names (e.g: muggu in Telugu and kolam in Tamil). It is quite a Hindu tradition although I've never heard about the metapohor with life.
designs made with various colours on the floor in the front porches of homes?
Rangoli?
Wild guess based on "ephemeral nature" and all.... Rangoli?
Rangoli is indeed the answer.
Cheers!
