Question for Aug 15, 2009

X was started on an experimental basis by the Telegraph Office, just three years after something similar was started in Europe. Edward Harper was the first person to actively promote X, and is widely considered to be the father of X. X played a small role in world war II, and rose to prominence after the war. At its peak, it was one of the best of its kind. Some of the people involved with X became household names, and Ameen Sayani and Vernon Corea, in particular, were at one point considered to be among the top five of their kind in the world. Salman Rushdie said of X, "I have to express my deep gratitude to X. It had a slightly more open attitude, so that's where I became familiar with all kinds of things that I could slightly regret, like the complete works of Ricky Nelson."

Identify X.

Public radio broadcasting...

I'm not sure if you are looking for a more specific answer such as All India Radio or something, but just "Public radio" fits all the clues well.

Interesting question!
Some kind of a pastime, perhaps a tournament of some sort in it?

My guess would a contract bridge tournament, of which those names were famous practitioners and which rose to fame in the post war era. I am not sure how it helped Rushdie though ;)

I should have mentioned that I was looking for a specific answer. However, at the time, I felt the line At its peak, it was one of the best of its kind indicates something specific. The question made it somewhat obvious that we are talking about something related to radio.

The correct answer is Radio Ceylon, which was established in 1921. As expected, Ameen Sayani seems to be the giveaway clue here. Public radio doesn't quite fit all the clues, since it was Radio Ceylon that was started on an experimental basis, and not public radio in general. Also, Edward Harper is by no means the father of public radio.

Congrats to Pratik and Gaurav for the right answer. Ankur also got very close with Binaca Geetmala.
