Quiz question for August 29, 2009

The two pictures above (left and right parts of the lower picture form one whole) are connected to X. X is an event in the past whose monumental consequences are beyond debate. But, the motivations of the two parties (A and B) involved in X still evoke much passion along ideological lines. While A's actions have drawn near universal condemnation, B's has its share of passionate supporters and vehement opponents. Although the agreement reached at X was soon ignored unilaterally by A, it was B who eventually prevailed after heroic and unlikely efforts which turned the tide of events against A in a much wider sense too. Identify X, A and B and explain how the pictures relate to X.

I am guessing this has something to do with WW2
Is X the treaty that Germany and the USSR signed, something to the effect that USSR will not fight Germany in return for a few countries or something like that.
so
A == Germany
B == USSR
and the lower picture shows areas controlled before and after the pact?

I have no clue what the top picture is..

X is the no-war treaty between Germany and Russia before WWII (which was obviously breached during the war).

A is Hitler (or Germany), B is Stalin (or Russia).

The treaty also had something about incorporating the countries between Germany and Russia into one of the 2 camps i.e. Lithuania, Latvia etc. go to Russia, Germany get part of Poland etc. Hence the map. After the war, the Russian section stayed with Russia forming the USSR. the German part had to be given back since they lost (I think).

X is invasion (or an agreement for annexation) of Poland by Nazi Germany (A)and Soviet Union (B) prior to WWII? The first image I'm guessing is some kind of symbol for a Polish revolution against this invasion?

X is the peace treaty signed between Hitler (A) and Stalin (B) at the start of world war II. Hitler ignored the treaty unilaterally when he attacked Russia, and it was Russia that eventually prevailed, which proved to be a turning point in the war.

No idea about the first picture. The second picture shows a before and after picture of Russian influence before and after the treaty was broken?

I am guessing it has something to do with Molotov-Ribbentrop pact between Nazi Germany and USSR regarding division of Poland and other Eastern European states. It was kind of a non-aggression pact between the two which Germany did not respect.

I have no idea about the first pic. Was that pact signed in Champagne? :P

All of you guessed X right as the Soviet-German non-aggression pact of 1939, Germany being A and the Soviet union B. Congratulations to Madhur, Nikhi, Kiran, Sailesh and Hari.

The second picture, as you doubtless guessed showed the contrast between the reality in eastern europe in the early years of the war and what was decided in the pact. Hari came closest to cracking the explanations of the first picture. The pact was better known as the MOLOTOV Ribbentrop pact, named after the leaders of the two delegations to the negotiations. The first visual is a stylised petrol bomb a.k.a MOLOTOV cocktail (certainly no champagne :P)
